Soil Unit: Intro

SOIL IS:

  • a medium of crop production
  • a snapshot of geologic, climatic, biological and human history.
  • a waste decomposer
  • a source material for construction
  • a filter of water and wastes
  • an essential natural resource
  • a producer and absorber of gasses
  • a home to organisms, animals and others(us?)
 SOIL DOES:

  • physically support plants
  • provide spaces underground for water and air
  • provide essential nutrients growth
  • contain mineral particles(texture)
  • provide a home for a myriad of organisms(which help bind soil together and release nutrient)

Some factors of soil creation are:
  • Parent material. Solid mineral form, rock etc.
  • Weathering/Climate. Physical and chemical, plays an essential role of releasing mineral elements from the parent material(rock)
  • Organisms. Break down organic matter into mineral elements. Also feed on mineral elements of parent material hastening the weathering process.
  • Topography. Generates, directs and catches the minerals weathered from the parent material.
  • Time. Soil formation takes time for all the processes to express themselves.
