Today in plant collection class I weeded around my tyre-garden and placed a layer of wood chip around them to repress any new weeds that grow.
Then I helped Tom weed around the Cedrus deodora and move about 10 wheelbarrow loads of wood chip to spread beneath it. This wood chip mulch will provide good nutrient for the tree as the fungal processes break down the cellulose of the wood chip.
