This morning I started "work experience" at the Polygrow Nursery.
To start with Brendan and I scrubbed the outside of the hothouse with warm soapy water and rinsed cleaned. The inside will have to be done sometime as this is where most of the dirt is. It seems that dust has blown in through the roof vents and with the condensation glued itself to the plastic...and algae has started to grow in the nutrient rich dust. :) a job for the springtime maybe.
Next we started to sort through the shadehouse and remove plants that needed attention into the potting shed. We cleared weeds from the gravel floor using a hoe and then a rake to lift the weeds through the gravel, then raking the gravel back in place.
I spent most of the rest of the afternoon removing pests and damaged foliage from twenty or so oak seedling/saplings before potting them on into larger containers.
I then watered them and replaced them in the shadehouse.
I also washed the entire auto-pot hydroponic system with dishwash/bleach solution, which reduces the chance of plant pathogens building up in the system.
