Plant Propagation : things to consider...

  • selecting a plant of a suitable variety, health, size.
  • deciding on the size of cutting preferred and a suitable tool to take the cutting.
  • ensure it is a good time of the season for this type of propagation.
  • choose a media(dirt) and a container.
  • decide on the process or treatment you will employ(plant specific).

  1. Steps to taking a cutting:

  1. organise your container, media and tools
  2. choose stock plant carefully.
  3. prune above a node with a clean cut without damaging the host plant.
  4. remove stem to just below the last remaining node on the cutting, cutting on a 30-40degree angle.
  5. remove lower leaves and trim remaining leaves each by one third to reduce transpiration whilst waiting for root growth.
  6. moisten the media thoroughly and make holes in neat rows with a dibber(stick, pencil or finger) adequate for your cuttings.
  7. place cuttings in the dibbed holes ensuring the leaves are not touching the media or the other cuttings.
  8. label and complete records!
